Harper Street, Stoke-on-Trent

Refurbishment and conservation of eleven former Victorian pottery workers terrace houses into a new heritage attraction.

The initial works were to demolish the existing out houses and undertake a soft strip of the existing terrace houses. The Architect design was to open up the existing housed to create large units on the ground floor with a full open space on the first floor. We engaged TSK Engineers to undertake a full temporary works design that would allow for the removal of masonry walls while still keeping the stability of the houses. All the ground floor slabs were removed to allow piling to be undertaken and under pinning to the remaining spin walls also all the roofs were stripped and re tiles. The old Lodge Keepers house remained as the original footprint as scope of works allowed this house to be brought back to the original design to show how peopled lived in the past Once the walls had been removed we installed new steels throughout the houses, this allowed a new first floor to be installed with the designed open plan area While works to the existing houses was ongoing we commence piling to the new build ready for the footing to be poured and blockwork to follow.

The fit out of the houses included:

  • new timber windows and doors

  • a full fit out internally which included M+E, new walls and flooring and decoration.

  • a zinc roof with new shop fronts and rendered walls

  • each unit has full M+E, toilet and kitchenette

  • A courtyard was created between the two building with new gates and handrailing
